The Houston Astros are making strategic moves this offseason regarding free-agent infielder Alex Bregman. At the start of the winter, the Astros made it clear that re-signing Bregman was a top priority, but they could not come to terms on a deal. Rather than capitulating and offering him nearly $200 million, the Astros turned their attention elsewhere.

They signed Christian Walker to play first base and Isaac Paredes to play third base but have now realized that the negotiations with Bregman have stalled once more. The Astros are back in the mix and currently stand as the frontrunners to land him, although Bregman has yet to show willingness to accept their reported $156 million offer.

To secure Bregman’s return and strengthen their offer, the Astros must free up additional funds. Trading starting pitcher Framber Valdez is a solid option that would provide significant financial relief. Numerous teams, including the Baltimore Orioles, would jump at the chance to acquire the Astros’ ace.

The Orioles have Heston Kjerstad, a 25-year-old outfielder who doesn’t have a clear starting role in Baltimore this season. With another significant outfielder signing by the Orioles, they are likely to trade Kjerstad before the season kicks off. Last season, he posted an impressive line of .253/.351/.394 with four home runs in just 99 at-bats, showcasing his power and hitting skills.

Additionally, 23-year-old Dylan Beavers is another enticing option. He recorded a .242/.342/.408 batting line last season while splitting time between Double-A and Triple-A. Beavers is expected to start the 2025 season at the Triple-A level, but with strong early performances, he could easily make his way to the big leagues before the All-Star break. His skills are well-rounded and promising.

Acquiring Valdez would be a game-changing move for the Orioles, but it would be an even more pivotal trade for the Astros. Shedding Valdez’s contract would not only provide financial flexibility but also address their urgent need for talented outfielders after the trade of Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs. This deal would deliver major benefits for the Astros and position them well for the future.
