Wigan Athletic are set to strengthen their squad by pursuing Oxford United winger Owen Dale, following the player’s indication that he could leave the Championship club.

According to Alan Nixon, this opportunity arose for Wigan after Leyton Orient decided to withdraw from negotiations, allowing the Latics to step in. Reports from the Oxford Mail had earlier suggested that Dale was likely to secure a loan move, but Wigan Today highlighted that manager Shaun Maloney had previously expressed a preference for permanent signings this month.

The recent injury to winger Silko Thomas, who is on loan from Leicester City, has created an urgent need for reinforcements on the flanks. This necessity has been further amplified by the recall of Michael Olakigbe by Brentford and Dion Rankine’s own injury issues.

Whether Dale joins as a permanent signing or on loan, his inclusion would be a valuable addition to Maloney’s squad as they look to improve their standing in League One, particularly following the departure of standout player Thelo Aasgaard to Luton Town, as reported by Football League World.

Additionally, Wigan has been navigating a series of injuries in central midfield, making the news of Thomas’s setback even more challenging for the team. Nonetheless, Dale’s potential arrival could provide a much-needed boost and address the current gaps in their squad, especially with his considerable experience.

Dale started last season with Blackpool, contributing two goals and two assists in 23 League One appearances before joining Oxford United on deadline day in January last year.

Given the current circumstances following Thomas’s injury in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Lincoln City, Wigan’s options on the wing are limited. The draw has left them nine points above the relegation zone and ten points shy of the playoff positions. Dale’s signing could significantly aid in the club’s efforts to climb the table.

Moreover, if negotiations proceed smoothly, there’s a possibility that the 26-year-old could make his debut for Wigan this Saturday when they take on Premier League Fulham in the FA Cup fourth round, adding an exciting element to the upcoming match.
